In modern history, the Czech republic was formerly an area called Czechoslovakia.  This was created post WW1 by combining areas.  The people were ruled by Russia until the people rose up with the Velvet Revolution and ousted the Communists in 1989. They then divorced themselves from Slovakia and became the Czech Republic.

As soon as this happened, westerners bought into Prague and established shops, restaurants and businesses.  Although some of the post Communist dust remains, this gem of a country is a colourful and fun place to visit.
